IMPORTANT NEWS
Well, this sucks. This is not the kind of news that I was hoping to share on this blog, but, since it never really got off the ground, I guess that's how it goes:
The odds are good that we are either going to 1) shut down Atomic New Wave Radio, or 2) roll it back to a Live365 subscriber-only station. Whatever change happens, if it happens, will happen in the next few days.
This isn't something that I take lightly. My wife & I have been running this station for over five years. I don't have the time to put into it that I used to, and the playlists tend to stagnate, but that isn't the reason for hanging it up.
The real reason is: We pay to run this station -- not a ton of money, but it's another monthly payment and, for the most part, that's been ok, until recently. I've never been totally comfortable with the whole idea of paying to play (& promote) someone's music if there is no profit in it for us. Of course, there has never been profit for us; at best it was free for a while, but that ended years ago. Now, the RIAA is pushing through their new internet radio royalty rates, and they are HUGE! Eventually, it will come down to us having to pay EVEN MORE to promote their bands -- money that I am reasonably sure will not go to the bands, but rather stop dead with the RIAA. Right now, the result is many, many more commercials on our free stream, and that's no fun. The whole system is bullshit, and I really don't feel like playing with the RIAA anymore. The entire system is broken, probably beyond fixing, and.... tough shit, right? I don't want to fight the RIAA, I don't want to pay the RIAA, I just don't want to deal with this mess anymore. But, for some reason, the RIAA seems to wield unlimited power in this country, so, I guess they can continue to push their 'flavor of the week' and I hope they're happy with that.
That was a long rant. Sorry. The point was: I think we're done. We'll probably just roll it back to a members-only station, but we may just pull the plug completely. I don't know.
Regardless, I would like to thank everyone for all of the support we have had through the years -- I read all of the e-mails we get (with the exception of the ones that are just pumping some new release that we don't care about), and 95% are great! Even if I didn't reply to them (sorry!), I read them.
When we make a final decision, we'll let you know here.
Thanks for the five great years everyone!
derek.

That's too bad :( I only listened to live365 on the weekends at work, but this was my favorite station! The RIAA is really shooting themselves in the foot (again). The main ones getting hurt by their actions are the bands, because they will get even less and less exposure, and the radio will continue to play nothing but the latest teen pop sensation. Well just wanted to tell you it was a great station you had, while it lasted! :) Good luck
